EQUITY

Funding

Maryland's charter schools receive, on average, $9,674 per pupil, compared to the $12,651 that conventional district public schools receive. Courts have affirmed the need for equitable funding.

ACHIEVEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Test Scores

Charter students, especially in the middle school years, have shown improved math and reading proficiency, and charter schools are also making significant progress in combating the achievement gap.

Closures

Charter school closures are evidence of accountability in action. As of February 2009, two Maryland charters have been closed - not due to poor academic achievement, but rather, district politics.
