Funding

Charters are funded similarly to conventional public schools, except regarding facilities. Michigan's charter schools receive, on average, $9,021 per pupil, compared to the $9,685 that conventional district public schools receive.

ACHIEVEMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Test Scores

In the 2006-07 school year, 72 percent of Michigan's charter schools made federal targets (AYP), compared with 69 percent of conventional schools in the same host districts.

Closures

As of February 2009, 27 Michigan charters have been closed. More than one-third suffered financial difficulties due to low enrollment. Another third were closed for operational deficiencies and the remainder for academic failure.
